How Do We See the Human in Biodiversity and Extinction Narratives? with Timothy Sweet

February 10, 2022 @ 6:00 pm 7:00 pm

Timothy Sweet is the author of Extinction and the Human: Four American Encounters

About this event

In Extinction and the Human: Four American Encounters, Timothy Sweet examines the force of human impact on megafauna—mammoths, whales, bison—and the often divergent Native American and Euro-American stories about that impact. Reflecting on questions of agency, responsibility, and moral assessment, the talk will engage with some consequences of thinking of humans as fundamentally separate from the rest of the natural world.

About the author:

Timothy Sweet is Eberly Family Distinguished Professor of American Literature at West Virginia University. His previous books include Traces of War (1990), American Georgics (2002), and Literary Cultures of the Civil War (2016).
