Dino Drafts: The Academy Beer Garden

September 8, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm

12th St. Catering and the Academy of Natural Sciences are proud to announce the resurgence of Dino Drafts: The Academy Beer Garden, as part of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway’s centennial celebration! Join us on Friday, September 8 for the Parkway 100 We Are Connected Kickoff Festival. From 4–10 p.m., enjoy free admission to the museum and celebrate with drinks, mouthwatering bites, dancing dinosaurs, and a party out on the Academy Plaza! Partial proceeds from Dino Drafts: The Academy Beer Garden benefit the Academy of Natural Sciences.

On Sept. 8, look for these activities inside the museum and outside in addition to the beer garden:

Live Animal Shows on stage at Aviator Park – 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. (rain location: Academy auditorium)

Dino Dance Party – Join Academy mascot Eddie and his friend Trixie as they dino dance their way through the prehistoric polka! Glow sticks will be provided for after the sun sets. 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, 9:30 p.m.

Live Animal Encounters Inside the Museum – Museum visitors will be treated to close encounters with a variety of live birds, mammals, and reptiles roaming the halls with their handlers throughout the night.

Backyards Around the World – How would your backyard be different if you were growing up in Australia? How about the Arctic Circle? What if you lived in the rainforest or the desert? Check out Academy specimens and touchable biofacts from around the world.

Bug Walks in Logan Square – Academy entomologists will lead walks in search of insects. Assemble at the Academy’s Parkway entrance at 4:15 p.m., 5:15 p.m., 6:15 p.m., and 7:15 p.m., and (with flashlights), at 8:15 p.m.

100 Years of Dinosaurs – Dinosaurs, with the help of paleontologists, have changed their look significantly in the last 100 years. We’ll be showing one of the earliest animated cartoons of a dinosaur, “Gertie the Dinosaur” (1914), accompanied by a film of modern paleo artists discussing their work as they lend their artistic talents to interpreting Hadrosaurus foulkii.

Backyard Adventures Closing Weekend – Sept. 8 marks the start of the last weekend for the Academy’s special exhibit. Leap into a garden of wonders, where you can experience the magic of a special backyard world. As you ride the bee bike, collect nectar, check out a food web pond, copy critter calls, and even dress up like living creatures, you’ll uncover surprising details about how organisms live and interact in their environments. You can even become a mechanic or engineer by learning the feats of construction that go into building a shed, solving the paver puzzle, and playing garden mini-golf. Figure out how to turn your own garden into a mini-exhibit—you’ll discover more science in your backyard than you’ll ever imagine!
