Designing Urban Ecosystems: Tools for Regenerative Living

April 1, 2018 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

Designing Urban Ecosystems: Tools and Techniques for Regenerative Living (Full Title)

A Four Part Course
Dates: Sundays – 4/1, 4/8, 4/15, 4/22
Time: 11:30am-1:30pm

Learn about landscape design, community building and future building in this 4-part course. Rooted in holistic horticultural practices and environmental justice, instructor Robyn Mello will draw from her experiences designing and maintaining public gardens throughout the Philadelphia. We will discuss principles of permaculture, land use policy, community organizing, and we will learn about varieties of edible and medicinal perennial plants that will grow well in the Philadelphia area. There will be both hands-on and lecture-based elements to this course, and some specific activities will be determined by attendees. Bartram’s Garden itself is a designed urban ecosystem, and we will be using the landscape as a teacher.

By the end of this course, students will possess:
– the ability to begin designing their own outdoor space using ecological design practices
– enhanced knowledge to approach the earth and our needs using a more holistic lens
– plant, pest, disease, and beneficial insect identification knowledge, as well as the ability to either deter and attract these organisms –
– tools and strategies for community organizing and social event planning for neighborhood work; and
– a list of resources to gain future experience and get started on projects!
