Are Biodegradable Trash Bags a Better Choice?

Here’s a Reader Question for Where Can I Wednesday:

What are your thoughts on biodegradable trash bags? I read somewhere that they’re useless in landfills because they don’t have the opportunity to break down?? I compost and recycle, but wondering if there’s any way to make my trash habits any better …

– Trying for Better Trash Habits

Correct on the point that they won’t break down in landfills. Landfills are made to keep everything as they are, which is also why compostable, biodegradable cups and/or utensils are useless in the trash. That corn plastic you’re using that you feel great about? It’s actually useless unless there is a compost bin and commercial composting facility.

The best thing you can do for your trash is to limit it! Instead, compost your food waste (also garden scraps, pet fur and human hair), which can reduce your waste as much as 40%. After recycling, reducing your waste consumption (going bulk/etc.), you’ll have a smaller amount of trash in the first place.

Keep up the good work.
