Global Day of Action for the Amazon Demonstration in Philly

This Thursday, September 5th, will be a Global Day of Action for the Amazon. There will be a demonstration held in Philadelphia at 5:30pm at the Cira Center, 2929 Arch Street.

The demonstration’s purpose is to call for international action to stop:

  • the current fires in the Amazon
  • environmental destruction at the hands of ranchers, agribusiness, mining, and other industries
  • illegal theft of protected indigenous lands

In addition, demonstrators will also be calling for action from BlackRock, an American global investment management corporation and the world’s largest asset manager that’s housed in the Cira Center, to divest from its interests that will profit from exploration and exploitation of the Amazon. BlackRock, among other investment firms, stand to make enormous profit at the hands of the Bolsonaro administration in Brazil, which has encouraged development of the Amazon and slashed funds for the agencies that protect the environment and recognized tribal lands.

There will be parallel actions taking place globally on the same day.
