What’s Fresh at Philly’s Farmer’s Markets this Summer?

It’s that time of year again! Summer is here, or rather a few short days away, marking the return of city farmer’s markets and their bounties of fresh, local summer fruits and vegetables. Don’t want to miss your favorites?

Here’s a quick guide to the summer’s harvests.

Summer Guide to Philly’s Farmer’s Markets:

As June is already winding down, you’re likely noticing a lot of greens at Farmer’s Markets and CSA shares. But what else should you add to your pantry?

Here’s what you should get while it’s hot in June:

  • Kale
  • Corn
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Leaf Lettuce
  • Snap Peas
  • Cabbage
  • Strawberries

July offers a lot too, especially for berry-lovers like me! Homemade Blueberry Pancakes anyone? Keep an eye out for these fruits and veggies while they’re in their prime:

  • Green Beans
  • Cucumbers
  • Eggplant
  • Summer Squash
  • Tomatoes
  • Blackberries
  • Raspberries
  • Blueberries

As the season winds down and August rolls through, there are still a plethora of fruits and veggies to add to your summer cookouts.

Here’s is August’s bounty to look for at the market or CSA share:

  • Cantaloupe
  • Watermelon
  • Plums
  • Pears
  • Nectarines
  • Melons
  • Okra
  • Collard Greens

Of course, there’s overlap between the months, and produce availability can vary from one market to another. All the more reason to visit the variety of farmstands and farmer’s markets that pop up in Philly this summer!
